As a scholar of global migration and identity formations, Dr. Kibria is committed to the study of structures of power and inequality, their consequences for families and communities, and the development of policies to address them. Her current projects include studies of the racialization of Muslim Americans; the transnational dynamics of immigrant families raising children with autism; and the negotiation of adult sibling relationships across divisions of social class, immigration, and citizenship, as well as responsibilities of care for aging parents.

She received her undergraduate degree from Wellesley College and her PhD in sociology from the University of Pennsylvania. Her most recent book is Race and Immigration (2011), with coauthors Cara Bowman and Megan O’Leary.
