Guidance on the Structure, Policies and Practices of the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences
The mission of the Boston University College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences is to nurture the discovery, creation, transmission, and application of knowledge and understanding across the humanities and the social, natural, and computational sciences. This mission applies to all of the College’s members, from the most decorated senior scholars to our matriculating undergraduates, and unifies our three great core tasks of undergraduate education, graduate education, and pioneering research. Creating Our Future, 2010–20: The Strategic Plan of the College of Arts & Sciences.
CAS is Boston University’s standard-bearer for the proud and successful tradition that is liberal education. The faculty and staff of the College are devoted to purposefully and vigorously pursuing the values and practices of liberal arts and sciences education. In order to fulfill this mission, the students, faculty, and staff of the College must strive to be a vibrant, supportive, and productive learning community across the great diversity of fields, approaches, and experiences encompassed by the institution. We also must choose to be active, engaged citizens of the larger communities to which we also belong—the University, the region, the country, and the world—in order for this mission to succeed.
In 2009/10, CAS launched Creating Our Future, 2010–20: The Strategic Plan of the College of Arts & Sciences. The plan includes a clear statement of the CAS mission, enumerates eight fundamental commitments, and presents goals and strategies for the College as a whole and for its diverse set of departments, programs, and centers. The CAS strategic plan flows from and supports the commitments of the 2007 BU strategic plan, Choosing to be Great. CAS faculty members can access both volumes of Creating Our Future Vol I and Vol II, including the CAS-wide and departmental plans and the associated data, using their BU login/password. A public version of the plan is available here.
The CAS Faculty and Staff Handbook aims to provide basic guidance in the structure, policies, and practices of the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences to assist faculty and staff in carrying out their work to the best of their ability. We do the best we can to keep this website updated, but faculty and staff should consult with their chair or director or relevant personnel in the Office of the Dean to be sure they have the most current information.
In matters of personnel, the Boston University Faculty Handbook is the governing document. The policies and practices of CAS must be consistent with the policies of Boston University as a whole.
The CAS Faculty and Staff Handbook is necessarily a work in progress because this is a continually evolving University and College. We welcome suggestions for improvement. Please address them to the Dean of CAS.
