The Pardee Center's Global Health Politics Workshop (GHPW) speaker series continues with a lecture by Adia Benton, Associate Professor of Anthropology, Northwestern University, titled “War is Not a Metaphor: Police Power & Public Health in the Pandemic Era.”
Drawing on ethnographic material from the West African Ebola and COVID-19 pandemics, Benton addresses the proliferation of police power in the form of public health practices, techniques, and ideologies during health crises, and the experiences of these practices among marginalized communities.
The GHPW is part of a two-year project convened by Pardee Center Faculty Research Fellow Joseph Harris with the goal of bringing together leading social scientists from the disciplines of anthropology, political science, and sociology, along with practitioners in Boston and around the world, to advance the understanding of health phenomena in a globally interconnected world.
