Lu Lingzi and Binland Lee

The Boston University community was deeply affected by the Patriots’ Day bombings that took place near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. What is usually a time of celebration for Boston and the University ended in tragedy. At BU, we mourned the loss of Lu Lingzi (GRS’13), a graduate student in statistics from China. The BU community came together in many ways in the aftermath of the bombings, most noticeably during a moving memorial service attended by Lu Lingzi’s parents and in its generous support of the Lu Lingzi Scholarship established in her memory.

Not long after these events, the community was left in mourning again when Binland Lee (CAS’13), a senior majoring in marine science, lost her life in a fire at her Allston home.

Lu Lingzi and Binland Lee were awarded their degrees posthumously at the 2013 BU Commencement.
