Title: AI-Enabled Software Systems: GenAI, Cloud, and Software Engineering
Abstract: Artificial intelligence, particularly generative AI, is fundamentally transforming how software systems are designed, developed, and deployed. This talk presents a vision for AI-enabled software engineering that integrates generative AI, cloud computing, and modern development practices to create scalable, intelligent, and production-ready systems. As the boundaries between software engineering and AI continue to blur, there is a growing need to rethink both system design approaches and the skills expected of software engineers. The session outlines how AI capabilities can be embedded within modern application architectures and supported by cloud platforms to enable rapid development, deployment, and scaling. It also highlights the evolving role of engineers, who must now understand not only traditional software development but also AI integration, data-driven workflows, and system-level design. Finally, the talk discusses implications for computing education, emphasizing the need for curricula that integrate AI, cloud technologies, and hands-on, applied learning experiences. This vision aims to prepare students to design, build, and deploy AI-driven systems effectively in real-world environments while adapting to the fast pace of technological change.
Bio: Mohammad Abu Shattal (S'16-M'18) earned his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Western Michigan University in 2017. He is currently a Program Chair and faculty member at Franklin University, where he leads curriculum development and program initiatives in cloud computing and related technologies. He also serves as a Senior Lecturer (part-time) at The Ohio State University, where he teaches courses in C programming, systems analysis and design, and business application development. He holds multiple industry certifications, including AWS Certified Solutions Architect, AWS Certified AI Practitioner, CompTIA Cloud+, and Microsoft Certified System Administrator, reflecting his commitment to aligning academic programs with industry standards. His research and teaching interests include cloud computing, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and next-generation wireless networks, with a focus on integrating AI and cloud technologies into applied, hands-on learning environments.
