BU's BEST: Introduction to Science Policy and Biomedical Careers in Science Policy Panel Discussion
Organized by BU's BEST (Boston University’s Broadening Experience in Scientific Training) What is science policy? How does the federal government impact scientific discovery and why should the scientific community care about what happens in Washington, DC? Trainees will learn about the federal government’s role in science, with a particular focus on funding, regulations, and current topics of debate. The session will also discuss science policy careers and it will conclude with a panel featuring scientists with public policy experience. Pre-session suggested reading: In advance of the session, trainees may wish to look at this helpful list of resources from the Engaging Scientists & Engineers in Policy Coalition: https://www.science-engage.org/scipolresources Lecturer: Ms. Jennifer Grodsky; Vice President for Federal Relations, Boston University Panelists Dr. Frazier Benya, recent Associate Director of the Committee on Science, Engineering, Medicine and Public Policy, The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Dr. Benjamin Krinsky; Assistant Director, Federal Strategy for Johns Hopkins University Dr. Naomi Webber; Managing Principal, Lewis-Burke Associates Moderator Dr. Barbara Schreiber; Associate Professor of Biochemistry & Cell Biology, Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine The first session i.e., the introduction to science policy will be a hybrid event (in person at 72 E. Concord St., Boston, MA 02118 and on Zoom). The panel discussion will be held via Zoom.
