ECE Colloquium: Mete Atatüre

Title: “Quantum Technologies with Crystal Defects: A Tale of Gemstone and Light”

Abstract: The technologies of tomorrow emerge from the science of today. This is one of the commonly used phrases to describe how scientific discoveries translate to useful technology. In the development of quantum physics, optics played a critical role from the early days at the birth of disruptive concepts to the modern era of accessing a tangible quantum world. Today, translation of curiosity-driven quantum physics to disruptive technologies is well on its way and many material platforms are under consideration for the physical implementation of useful devices. Diamond is one of many material platforms that offer promising technological roadmaps. This talk will present the journey towards near-term applications of the quantum world from the perspective of this unexpected partnership of gemstone and light.

Bio: Mete Atatüre is a Professor of Physics and the Head of the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge. He completed his PhD at Boston University in 2002 and then worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at ETH Zurich. He joined the Cavendish Laboratory in 2007 as an Assistant Professor and received his full Professorship in 2015. His research efforts straddle multiple material platforms for quantum networks and quantum sensing. He is a Fellow of Optica, Academia Europaea, Institute of Physics, and Science Academy Turkey. He was awarded the IoP Thomas Young Medal and Prize in 2020 and the Koc Medal of Science in 2024 for his contributions in quantum science and technologies.
