The EU and the Future of Regulating AI

Join Professor Woodrow Hartzog and Dr. Céline Castets-Renard the Canada Research Chair in International and Comparative Law of Artificial Intelligence (University of Ottawa) for a discussion on AI regulation in the European Union. While the European Union is the first jurisdiction in the world to have adopted comprehensive and ambitious legislation to regulate AI (AI Act) in 2024, the current geopolitical situation driven by the United States does not encourage the adoption of such laws elsewhere. Furthermore, the European Union is facing external and internal pressure from certain stakeholders to reduce the burden and cost of its digital laws. The European Commission has responded with “digital omnibus regulation proposals", including AI, to simplify or even lighten the rules. In this complex and unstable context: what does the future hold for AI regulation in Europe and elsewhere?
