An Artist Exchange: Billie Mandle and Cassandra Zampini
Boston University College of Fine Arts School of Visual Arts and the Griffin Museum are delighted to present an in-person conversation featuring artists Billie Mandle and Cassandra Zampini from "A Yellow Rose Project." This event will include an intimate, interview-style conversation between the two artists, offering insights into their creative practices and work. The discussion will be followed by an open dialogue with students, providing an opportunity for questions, engagement, and deeper exploration of the themes and inspirations behind their art.
S. Billie Mandle is an artist raised in Northern California. She works with photography to connect the scientific and the sacred. Her projects have been supported by fellowships from Light Work, Yaddo, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, and a research grant from the University of California Los Angeles Archives. Her books include Reconciliation (Kehrer Verlag, 2020), Stellar Skytron (Dust Collective, 2020), Circumference (Dust Collective, 2024), and Asunder (TBW, forthcoming 2025). She was nominated for the Foam Paul Huf Award and the Prix Pictet and her photographs are held in several public collections including the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Addison Gallery of American Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Mandle is an Associate Professor of Photography at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, having previously taught at Hampshire College. She has an MFA from MassArt and a BA in biology from Williams College. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Cassandra Zampini is a New York–based artist whose work explores how digital life shapes human experience and identity. Following in the tradition of artists who have interrogated and recontextualized mass media, she turns her lens toward internet culture, where algorithms, memes, and viral images shape what we see, feel, and believe. Through screenprinting and image aggregation from internet content, Zampini creates spaces for connection and contemplation, where wonder, meaning, and the beauty of real human experience can resurface. Her work has been exhibited nationally at institutions including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona; the Arnot Art Museum; the Griffin Museum of Photography; and, most recently, the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia. Her work has been featured in The Atlantic, The Art Newspaper, and The Collector Daily, and her pieces are held in private, public, and corporate permanent collections, including Armoni Investments in Boston and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
