Boston University Wind Ensemble “Symphonic Metamorphosis”
Boston University School of Music presents Boston University Wind Ensemble performing Paul Hindemith’s masterpiece Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber. This event is free and open to the public.
Though the version of the work for winds was not completed until 1961, the composer had originally conceived of the work as existing in both versions. In it, Hindemith renews the innovation of operatic composer Weber. Similarly, Paul Dooley pays homage to master-composers Gabrieli and Stravinsky in Masks and Machines. The listener will also hear the fortspinnung in both works. The program begins with Mozart’s Serenade in C minor, a work for wind octet that is of Classical symphonic scope.
Repertoire:
• Mozart: Serenade No. 12 in C minor, K. 388 (ca. 1782)
• Dooley: Masks and Machines (2015)
• Hindemith/Wilson: Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber (1943/1961)
