Strengthening your Writing and Research - A Practical Approach

Description: Excellent research is only part of the work for an excellent scientist. Clear, persuasive, thoughtful communication is the other part, and that requires writing. While “writing up the results” sounds as though writing is the last step of a process, small regular doses of writing can inform your research, deepen your thinking, and spark creative insight. We will discuss habits, resistance, and some common barriers to a consistent writing practice, and consider how we might develop our own sustainable habit. Participants should leave with a renewed sense of commitment to their work, and with several practical approaches to strengthening their own writing.

Learning goals: Participants will learn to identify their own biases and barriers to writing, will develop new approaches to creating a writing practice, and will leave with a clear sense of how attention to writing is also attention to research.

Speaker bio: Sofie Kleppner is Associate Vice Provost and Associate Dean for Postdoctoral Affairs at Stanford University where she directs postdoctoral professional development, policy, and administration. She sits on the advisory boards of several postdoctoral training grants, as well as the Faculty Staff Help Center and the Center for Teaching and Learning. She was Chair of the AAMC GREAT group Postdoctoral Steering Committee on which she served from 2016 - 2021.

Dr. Kleppner received her PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Pennsylvania and completed her postdoctoral training at UCLA after which she worked in preclinical development for small biotechnology companies developing cell-based therapeutics and drug delivery systems. She interned with the Stanford Office of Medical Development before joining the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute as Program Officer then Associate Director. She has a special interest in conflict resolution and has trained in both restorative justice with David Karp and mediation with the Center for Understanding in Conflict.

Although the postdoc office motto is All Postdocs All the Time, non-postdoc-related time is spent with her family of 3 people, 2 cats, and a dog. She spends most of her non-working time outdoors, writes personal essay and has recently taken up the tenor saxophone.
