Boston University Symphony Orchestra - DMA Conductor Showcase & Composition Competition Winner
Boston University School of Music presents the DMA Conductor Showcase and Composition Competition winner concert. This program features conductors and current DMA candidates Gordon Cheung and Ian Henscheid, and the winning composition from the College of Fine Arts Composition Competition: '4.186' by Jennifer Ortiz Valverde (CFA'24). This piece captures the rapid phase changes of water molecules between solid, liquid, and gas due to temperature shifts. The title, "4.186," references the specific heat of water—4.186 joules of energy needed to raise the temperature of one gram of liquid water by 1°C. This high specific heat reflects the composition's energetic build-ups and releases, mirroring the substantial energy required to change water's temperature. The concert concludes with Stravinsky’s dramatic ballet suite from 'The Firebird' (1919 version). Join us on this magical journey as Prince Ivan enlists with the Firebird to cast a spell over the evil Kastchei and save the world.
Program:
• Ortiz Valverde: 4.186 (9’)
• Stravinsky: The Firebird Suite (1919) (23’)
