Politics of the Mind: Marxism and Mental Distress

Social work scholar Iain Ferguson, PhD, will draw from his book “Politics of the Mind: Marxism and Mental Distress” as he challenges the dominant models of mental distress and explains his belief that the roots of the current mental health crisis lie primarily in the ideology and operations of neoliberal capitalism, not in our brains and genes. Dr. Ferguson will discuss the promotion of individualism and its contribution to systemic crises of recent years, the effect of capitalism on emotional needs in relation to Marx’s theory of alienation, and how collective resistance that challenges alienation can benefit our mental health. This event is hosted by Boston University School of Social Work (BUSSW) as part of the BUSSW Equity & Inclusion Speaker Series which creates a publicly accessible platform for thought leadership from BUSSW and the international social work community.
