Project STEP: Shaping the future of Music Education
Join BU School of Music for an inspiring event with Project STEP! Are you passionate about music, education, or creating a more inclusive world? Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear from the leaders of Project STEP, a nationally recognized music education program right here in Boston! This event is free and open to the public.
Project STEP is breaking barriers in classical music by providing top-tier training to underrepresented students and shaping the future of the art form. Their impact is far-reaching, with recent projects that include recording with A Far Cry and Midori, and exciting collaborations with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Sphinx Virtuosi. With accolades like performing at the White House and winning a National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award, Project STEP is making waves in the classical music world—and you could be part of that impact!
As the Executive Director of Project STEP, Josué González brings extensive experience in music education. He previously served as the Director of Education for Rockport Music and as a teacher and program director for the El Sistema music program at the Conservatory Lab Charter School in Boston. A classically trained cellist, Josué holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Performance and Suzuki Pedagogy from the Cleveland Institute of Music. He is also a graduate of the Perrone Sizer Institute for Creative Leadership. His work in music education earned him an Emerging Leader Award from the Arts Schools Network in 2017, and he was a prize winner at the 2011 Sphinx Competition.
Dr. Ian Saunders is an accomplished double bassist and educator, with degrees in double bass performance from The Pennsylvania State University, an Artist Diploma from The University of Cincinnati, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Maryland. He has extensive experience in both orchestral performance and music education, having worked with various prestigious orchestras and youth music programs. Dr. Saunders has held positions such as Assistant Dean of Students for the Eastern Music Festival, Classical Roots Coordinator for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and Assistant Dean for Artistic and Social Change at The Longy School of Music.
