Alumni Medical Library: Civil War Medicine & Recognition of Black Healthcare Professionals
Join Alumni Medical Library and Dr. Robert Beazley and Dr. Angelique Harris from Boston University’s Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine for a panel discussion on medical practices, the socio-political climate and influence of Black healthcare professionals, and how the rich history of Boston University fits into the legacy and historical narrative of medical practices and caretaking during the Civil War era. About the speakers:Dr. Robert M. Beazley, MD, Emeritus Professor, Surgery at Boston University’s Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine, was born, raised and educated in Maryland. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland having completed his general surgery residency at Baltimore's University of Maryland Hospital in 1970. He spent the next three years at the NIH in the Cancer Institute Surgery Branch before moving to LSU in New Orleans as the Chief of Surgical Oncology. Beazley joined Boston University in 1988 where he was the Chief of Surgical until he retired in 2004. In his Senior undergraduate year, he managed to enroll into an extremely popular Civil War History course and came to the realization that he should have been a history major, and history of surgery has become a lasting hobby for him.Dr. Angelique C. Harris (she/they) serves as the Associate Dean for Diversity & Inclusion at the Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, Executive Director of Faculty Development for BU Medical Campus, and Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine. An applied medical sociologist, Dr. Harris leads innovative programs and initiatives to foster inclusive environments in academic health sciences and STEMM. Her research encompasses health and community activism, race and ethnicity, gender and sexualities, and the sociocultural constructions of health within marginalized communities. For questions or accommodation requests, please reach out to Dominique Couturier at dcouturi@bu.edu.
