Global Health Politics Workshop: “The Trouble with Maternal Death Narratives: Pregnancy Care, Public Health Intervention & the Power of Storytelling”

Adeola Oni-Orisan, Assistant Professor, Family and Community Medicine, University of California, Davis.Adeola Oni-Orisan will examine how maternal death narratives function, circulate, and structure solutions to the problem of maternal mortality. Based on archival and ethnographic research in Geneva and Nigeria, she will reveal how African women’s bodies are centered as sites of knowledge production over their minds, and the consequences this has for efforts to lower maternal mortality rates. She will end with a glimpse into what might be possible if other stories were told.
