CURA Special Men - Affect and Authority in Apocalyptic movements
This event is part of the CURA Colloquium.
Nicole Correri, PhD Student, Islamic Studies, Religion will lead a discussion on their paper, which explores how non-hegemonic men in apocalyptic milieus, making careful comparisons between QAnon and Shi'i movements, attempt to redeem authority and power in the face of political crisis, defeat, and loss. Of interest is how power circulates and is amplified by apocalyptic milieus that are affectively charged with secrecy and special insider status. In addition, this paper examines how apocalyptic movements promote a sacralized hypermasculinity. Reading the Paper in advance is required for attendance. Email arleneb@bu.edu for your copy.
As part of CURA's 2022-2023 Colloquium, themed "“Religion and Authoritarianism," selected fellows participate in the twice-monthly interdisciplinary Colloquium on Religion and World Affairs to workshop papers. Each fellow presents their own paper as part of the Colloquium and participates in the discussion of papers by other fellows and invited authors from outside BU. The colloquium sessions are open to the general public, with the expectation that all attendees read the papers in advance and that the sessions focus on providing feedback and suggestions to the authors.
