Andromeda in the Stars

Written by: Claire Gardner Directed by: E Bernard “Andromeda in the Stars is a musical adaptation of the mythology surrounding Andromeda, Perseus, Medusa and Athena. When Andromeda’s mother, Cassiopeia, exclaims that her daughter is more beautiful than anything or anyone else, Poseidon sends a monster to destroy their homeland. Cephus, Andromeda’s father, solves this problem the only way he knows how, with violence. He chains his daughter to the cliffs naked and alone. Visited by Athena and rescued by Perseus, Andromeda starts a new life without her mother, but is forever changed by the loss of her first home. When Andromeda prefers Athena’s company to Perseus’s, tensions grow between the two children of Zeus. When Medusa reveals her romantic history with Athena to Andromeda, the lovers separate and meet again where galaxies collide. This play intentionally rewrites mythology that supports misogyny and excludes queer realities. The feminist and explicitly queer themes in Andromeda in the Stars will serve to critique Western culture idealized in the past and present.”
