A Community-University Collaboration: The Sociedad Latina Project
In Spring 2020, Sociedad Latina and Boston University received a four-year NSF grant to design, implement, and evaluate middle school STEAM activities that are integrated with the Massachusetts’ My Career and Academic Plan (MyCAP) initiative. The STEAM program was implemented as a community-based participatory action research effort between Sociedad Latina and three departments/offices at BU, including the Department of Physics, Office of Government & Community Affairs, and Wheelock College of Education and Human Development. In this discussion, we will explore the fun, engaging STEAM activities focused on the key concepts of Network Science, career lessons focused on how youth’s emerging science skills expand their future opportunities, and collaborative research during the COVID-19 epidemic.
