American Citizenship and Its Discontents

The current crisis at the border and last year’s controversies about who and how to count in the 2020 Census are only the latest manifestation of questions that touch on the meaning of citizenship in the United States.

What does the past indicate about the evolving nature of American citizenship? What do recent events and contemporary movements suggest about U.S. citizenship, connected say to Black Lives Matter, the 2020 election, gender/sexuality, ransacking of the Capitol, violent white supremacists, the COVID-19 plague, and environmental degradation? What might the future disclose?

Three distinguished scholars will provide comments and insights to these crucial questions:

Matthew Pratt Guterl, Professor of Africana Studies and chair of American Studies, Brown University

Joseph Lowndes, Professor of Political Science, University of Oregon

Deva Woodly, Professor of Politics, The New School for Social Research

Panel Chair: Neta C. Crawford, Professor and Chair of Political Science, Boston University
