CURA Colloquium "When Rebels Bow Before the Cross: The Beauty of Religion and the Ugliness of Politics in Burundi"
with Noel Twagiramungu, CURA Fellow and Timothy Longman, CURA Director As Pentecostalism has grown substantially across Africa, this religious movement has rapidly increased its political influence. Burundi’s President Pierre Nkurunziza was among the first African leaders who identified as Pentecostal, and the ways in which he made his faith very public and claimed divine providence for his rule served to blur the lines between religion and politics in Burundi. Based on field research conducted in 2018, including an extensive interview with the first lady, this article explores the legacy of Nkurunziza’s Pentecostal leadership.
