The Great Demographic Illusion: How Assimilation Matters in 21st Century America

Join BU's Department of Sociology for the 12th Annual Albert Morris Lecture in Sociology on Tuesday, April 13, at 5:00pm via Zoom. Professor Richard Alba will present on the topic, "The Great Demographic Illusion: How Assimilation Matters in 21st Century America?” highlighting key themes of his recent book The Great Demographic Illusion: Majority, Minority, and the Expanding American Mainstream (2020, Princeton University Press). Dr. Richard Alba is a Distinguished Professor of Sociology at the Graduate Center at CUNY. He is an eminent scholar of race, ethnicity, and migration. His latest books are The Next Generation: Immigrant Youth in a Comparative Perspective (2011), coedited with Mary Waters, and Blurring the Color Line: The New Chance for a More Integrated America (2009). His books include Ethnic Identity: The Transformation of White America (1990); Italian Americans: Into the Twilight of Ethnicity (1985); and, most recently, Remaking the American Mainstream: Assimilation and Contemporary Immigration (2003), co-authored with Victor Nee. He has been elected president of the Eastern Sociological Society and vice-president of the American Sociological Association. Dr. Alba also is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and American Academy of Arts & Sciences.
