Animal City: The Domestication of America

Join the IOC and the BU History Department for a discussion with Andrew Robichaud, Assistant Professor of History at BU, and Catherine McNeur, Associate Professor of Environmental History and Public History at Portland State University, as they discuss Robichaud's book, Animal City: The Domestication of America.

Animal City explores urban growth and transformation in the 19th century, and how those changes are a product of social and political struggles related to humans’ attempt to control urban animal populations. Land use changes and enhancements in animals’ moral standing in law and culture had profound impacts beyond our relationships with animals, from urban development to what it means to be human.
