UA 617 Guest Lecture: Sustainable Urban Food Production: Challenges and Opportunities
Join Boston University City Planning and Urban Affairs class UA 617 Actionable Sustainability for a guest lecture on sustainable urban food production featuring Carrie Murphy, Extension Agent and Lawn and Garden Program Leader, University of Delaware Cooperative Extension. This lecture will specifically focus on how food production takes place in urban spaces with case examples from Delaware; as well as the policy and in-practice aspects. Carrie Murphy is an extension agent and program leader for the Lawn and Garden Program at the University of Delaware Cooperative Extension. She is also the Master Gardener coordinator for New Castle County, Delaware. Carrie holds a B.S. from Towson University and has a master's degree in plant & soil sciences from the University of Delaware. Carrie is co-chair of The Delaware Urban Farm and Food Coalition, which works to bring together resources and technical assistance through a collaborative approach to urban farming, all the while aiming to increase access to fresh, nutritious, locally-grown food to help build healthier, sustainable communities. Bringing her expertise and urban farming lens to the table, Carrie is also a founding member of the Statewide Farm and Food Policy Council, an advisory group to the Delaware Secretary of Agriculture. She continues to pursue her interests in supporting sustainable landscapes, vegetable gardening, organic production, backyard composting, school and community gardens, and local foods. And from Carrie’s perspective, “Master Gardeners and Master Food Educators help communities better understand where their food -- like tomatoes, peppers and kale -- comes from.” All are welcome! Zoom link will be emailed after registrants RSVP.
