Skippyjon No: Confronting Mis- and Under-representation of BIPOC Identities in ChildrenR17;s Literature in Online Learning During the Pandemic
In 2015, there were more animal characters in childrenR17;s literature than ANY Black, Asian, Latinx, or Indigenous characters. In 2018 there were more animal characters in childrenR17;s literature than Black, Asian, Latinx, or Indigenous characters combined. This clear underrepresentation of Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) in childrenR17;s literature is further compounded by glaring misrepresentationsR12;portrayals of non-white characters in childrenR17;s literature often invoke harmful stereotypes of race, culture, and ethnicity. The good news: there are tools for discerning authentic from inauthentic representations and empowering from disempowering narratives. BU Wheelock Language & literacy experts Dr. Laura Jimenez and Dr. Andrea Bien invite you to explore these tools with us, as well as consider what is possible in elementary classrooms filled with rich diverse literature.
