Skippyjon No: Confronting Mis- and Under-representation of BIPOC Identities in ChildrenR17;s Literature in Online Learning During the Pandemic

In 2015, there were more animal characters in childrenR17;s literature than ANY Black, Asian, Latinx, or Indigenous characters. In 2018 there were more animal characters in childrenR17;s literature than Black, Asian, Latinx, or Indigenous characters combined. This clear underrepresentation of Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) in childrenR17;s literature is further compounded by glaring misrepresentationsR12;portrayals of non-white characters in childrenR17;s literature often invoke harmful stereotypes of race, culture, and ethnicity. The good news: there are tools for discerning authentic from inauthentic representations and empowering from disempowering narratives.
