The Queer Art of Reading & Resilience: Uplifting BIPOC Transgender Life and Spirit
“Reading” has a rich and vibrant history within queer culture, one that conveys the strength, imagination, and cognition required to live in defiance of a heteronormative culture which seeks to destroy Queer life, especially BIPOC trans and gender non-conforming individuals. It is for these reasons that we have chosen to highlight the importance of “reading” as an act having everything to do with love, appreciation, community, and survival. Students will be initiated into the “Queer Art of Reading” by participation in a panel discussion of BIPOC trans folxs. Hosted and produced by Just JP, a Queer Latinx gender non-conforming performer and advocate, this event considers the practice of “reading” as a communal and spiritual act that uplifts the life resiliency, and survival of Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, and other non-white Transgender and non-binary individuals.
