Sociology Department Seminar

Racialized Organizations, Diversity, and the Maintenance of the Racial Order Victor Ray is an assistant professor of sociology at University of Iowa. H’s research applies critical race theory to classic sociological questions. He is currently working on two book manuscripts: a project focused on race and organizational theory and an edited volume (co-edited with Jennifer Mueller) on race and sociological theory writ large. Victor is also an active public scholar, publishing commentary in outlets such as The Washington Post and Newsweek. His work has been funded by the Ford Foundation, and the National Science Foundation. His seminar presentation explores diversity, which is a ubiquitous yet ambiguous term in contemporary race scholarship. Drawing on examples from several empirical domains, he argues that the study of diversity should be contextualized in relation to an emerging body of research on racialized organizations that sees racial inequality as foundation to organizational emergence, structure, and processes.
