The for-profit corporation, one of the dominant institutions of our times, has no general legal obligation to the well-being of society or to individual consumers. For-profit corporations will seek profit for their stockholders using all legal means available, and the pressures imposed by stock-based compensation schemes and financial markets often lead corporations to indulge in reckless, irresponsible, and environmentally destructive behaviors.
