New Voices in Mexican Cinema: Alonso Ruizpalacios
Join us via Zoom or Facebook Live for a talk by Alonso Ruizpalacios about his work in the Mexican and global context of cinema. The talk will be followed by a question and answer session about Ruizpalacios's films, notably "Gueros." You are welcome to attend both sessions or just one. Alonso Ruizpalacios is a rising star among the new generation of Mexican directors, after Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuaron. His work is highly original, engaging with Mexico’s recent past in provocative ways. “Güeros,” a revisionist cinematic exploration of politics (Mexico’s student movement of the 1990s) and of auteur cinema (Nouvelle Vague) has been acclaimed worldwide. The New York Times describes the film as “a flip-book history lesson, one that evokes the pain and comedy — the pop, the politics, the tedium and the momentousness — of a particular moment in the endless, cyclical chronicles of youth and disillusionment.”
