The History of BU Law: A Two-Part Webinar Series with Professor Seipp

David Seipp, a faculty member at BU Law since 1986, will offer alumni a two-part illustrated talk about the history of Boston University School of Law.When BU Law opened in 1872, most new lawyers did not attend any formal classroom legal education. Professor Seipp's Part One of this two-part presentation starts with how lawyers learned the law before law schools became the usual route into the profession. He then tells the story of BU's founding and early decades in friendly rivalry with Harvard Law School across the Charles River. You will find out what Judge Dwight Foster said in 1875 when a student interrupted his Equity lecture by shooting a pistol in the classroom. And you will hear how Justice Holmes set the agenda of twentieth century American law in his "Path of the Law" speech at the opening of BU's new law school building in 1897.Part Two of Seipp's talk will bring the story up to the present day, through the experiences of students and careers of graduates from the early 1900s, through the dislocations of World War Two and student protests around 1970, and to the proliferation of clinics, journals, and programs over recent decades. Learn which BU graduates founded the other Boston law schools and which founded law schools on the other side of the country and on the other side of the globe.
