Watson Research CenterFaculty host: Ajay JoshiLight refreshments will be available at 10:45 am.Title: IoT Systems - Architectures, Circuits and Protocols Toward Energy AutonomyAbstract:IoT systems are seeing tremendous growth in applications from personal health and medical devices to home monitoring and automation, industrial sensing and actuation, as well as environmental monitoring systems. The disparate requirements that each application sets in terms of size, range, device lifetime and latency can greatly influence the optimal system architectures, circuit and protocol choice in each case. In this context, my work focuses on RF communication, timing circuits, energy harvesting and power management. In this talk, I present work in industrial monitoring and personal medical device spaces.A system analysis of the industrial monitoring space is used to optimize protocols, RF circuits, timing, leakage and power management circuits, with each technique providing order-of-magnitude improvements in various duty cycling regimes. For example, I present a 400pW-leakage +10dBm BLE transmitter with a dynamic range of 7.6E7, and a power converter with 240pW quiescent power and 2E6 dynamic ranges, both achieving state-of-the-art performance.In the short-range medical space, I present RF-MEMS integration and coding techniques for improved system efficiencies. Overall, the techniques explored in this talk aim to expand operation of IoT devices to ever more energy constrained situations and towards energy autonomous systems.Bio:Arun Paidimarri received the B.Tech degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, India, in 2009 and the S.M. and Ph.D degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, MA in 2011 and 2015 respectively. He was a postdoctoral associate in the Microsystems Technology Laboratories at MIT until May 2016. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, NY.His research interests are in low power wireless system, including the design of RF circuits, protocols, timers and energy harvesting. In the summers of 2011 and 2012, he completed internships at Texas Instruments in Dallas, TX, working on timing circuits and low power PAs.Mr. Paidimarri was a co-recipient of the best-paper award at the IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC) 2013. He was awarded the President of India Gold Medal in 2009. He won a Silver Medal at the 37th International Chemistry Olympiad held in Taipei, Taiwan in 2005.
