Christianity, Development and Modernity in Africa
Christianity in Africa comes in (at least) two very different forms. An ‘enchanted’ form (found extensively in Pentecostalism) understands even this-worldly events largely in terms of spirit causality, whereas another form (best exemplified by Catholicism) effectively discounts this enchanted worldview and in its focus on development increasingly functions as an NGO. Does the first form further Africa’s development? And to what extent does the second still function as a religion?
