This program will give participants the opportunity to practice their English language skills in a small group setting and build confidence in their ability to navigate American culture. Acquiring language skills comes with a sense of empowerment and a greater willingness to advocate for oneself in both academia and in one's work. This program will provide participants with the skills needed to better express themselves professionally, and will help its participants better navigate the lay arena of their lives as they interact with various services and companies or build relationships with people outside of their own cultural community. This program will run from January to May of 2015 for one- 2 1/2 hour session per week with once a month with coffee hour reception. Spouses are encouraged to attend. At the beginning of the program, participants will be asked what topics they would like to cover over the course of this program in order to best meet their personal needs. Although topics such as grammar or sentence structure will be addressed, this program will focus more on improving verbal communication and comprehension through heavy emphasis on conversing both in small and large groups.
