BU UROP Research Team Look to Observe the Competition Between Different Insect Species

In the 1920s, Boston University professor Otto Plath studied insects at the Arnold Arboretum in [...]Jamaica Plain, where he observed 13 different species of bumblebees. Today, a team of researchers funded by the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program have only found four different types of bumblebees at the arboretum—one of which is extremely rare.

The decline in bumblebee species at the arboretum about 100 years ago to now offer a glimpse into global reports of dramatic decrease in insect diversity, specifically in pollinators, says BU biology student Matteo Finnerty, who is part of the research team conducting field work at the Arnold Arboretum. There’s been increasing, worldwide concern that honeybees have been out-competing native pollinators.
