Led by Dr. Deepthi Gunasekaran and Dr. Gopal Yadavalli, a new program called VITAL—Visual Thinking [...]& Art in Learning Medicine—brings fellows, residents, and students into BU’s art galleries for hands-on sessions that use the visual arts to teach observation, communication, and clinical reasoning. Through drawing exercises, close-looking activities, and guided group discussions, participants learn to embrace ambiguity, think more deeply, and connect more meaningfully—with patients and with each other. This isn’t just about art appreciation. It is about training better doctors—ones who can see more, listen better, and respond with greater clarity and empathy.
