One of Major League Baseball’s worst kept secrets is that pitchers have always used foreign [...]substances, commonly referred to as “sticky stuff,” on the ball to gain an advantage over hitters. Now that the MLB has cracked down with new sticky substance enforcement rules in an effort to reduce the spin rate on pitched balls, we asked College of General Studies senior lecturer Andy Andres, an expert in mathematics, natural sciences, and baseball analytics, to explain how sticky substances gave pitchers such a huge advantage over hitters.
