Thanks to an $18 million gift from media mogul Sumner M. Redstone (Hon.'94) and other generous donations, next year's incoming class of law students will get to break in a brand-spanking-new addition to the existing Law Tower.

The project, currently under way, will result in a 93,000-square-foot, 5-story structure, which will house most of the Law School's new high-tech classrooms. The current 18-story building, built in the Brutalist style, has suffered space constraints as the program has grown and the field changed.

Sumner Redstone (Hon.'94), the majority owner of National Amusements and the chairman of the boards of Viacom, the CBS Corporation, and the MTVi Group, speaks at the School of Law about the challenges of keeping a media company profitable in the digital age. Best known for his mid-1990s statement "Content is king," Redstone discusses the ongoing threat of content piracy and offers a "digital manifesto" for the long-term success of both artists and media companies: collaboration between major media corporations in the fight against piracy and intellectual property theft.

For years, the University’s iconic campus beauty shot was the quiet, tree-lined Bay State Road, with its stately brownstones and Charles River backdrop. These days, the Campaign for Boston University has shifted the center of energy slightly inland—to Commonwealth Avenue.

That shift has been a goal of President Robert A. Brown—to embrace the urban nature of the campus. After all, he says, Comm Ave is “who we are.”
