Every year hundreds of Boston University students chose to make a difference, volunteering in disaster zones and troubled communities across the country, joining Alternative Spring Break trips organized by BU’s Community Service Center.

These volunteers spent the week building a roof over a wheelchair ramp and enclosing a bathroom at Cranks Holiness Church in infamous Harlan County, Kentucky. The majority of the students had never even hammered a nail — let alone installed a bathroom ceiling — but they learned.

It’s just a few days away. Spring vacation. That time of year when you’re either putting away the books for a week to catch up on sleep, hit a beach, or travel around the country to volunteer for Alternative Spring Break or frantically cramming to make up for all the studying you haven’t done this semester.

Either way, we wanted to hear what students will be doing next week. So, this week’s “YouSpeak” asks: “What are your plans for spring break?”

Spring Break 2011 trip to Omaha to work with Rebuilding Together. We got to experience the best of the midwest. The video highlights our stops at Niagara Falls and the Worlds Largest Truck Stop in the beautiful state of IOWA. We were able to give so much to the community of Omaha, but nothing compared us for what they gave back. Watch our trip to the tallest building in Omaha, the First National Bank Building, a trip to Omaha's world famous Zoo, some wicked slides in downtown Omaha, and of course a few more surprises along the way.

Revisiting New Orleans: Adrienne Bossi ('10) provides legal assistance to Katrina victims

When Adrienne Bossi (’10) traveled to New Orleans in 2008, the effects of Hurricane Katrina were still apparent in the area.

“It was about two-and-a-half years after the storm, and it was noticeably deserted,” says Bossi, who visited the city her first year at BU Law on a school sponsored pro bono spring break trip.

Bossi returned to New Orleans on the same pro bono trip this spring break of 2010.

“It was nice to see the changes. There were more people; kids riding around on bikes. There weren’t as many houses with the spray paint marks left by the National Guard or whoever had been searching the wreckage after the storm,” she says.

Bossi recalls driving four hours looking for open grocery stores in 2008. She and fellow spring breakers had collected money to donate food to people still stranded in temporary housing trailers, without cars or repaired public transportation.

“Some of the projects that we did my 1L year weren’t really pertinent anymore,” says Bossi. “It was nice to see that changes have been made in the last two years. They’re moving on to bigger and better issues.”

This year, Bossi worked for the Innocence Project, where she helped gather documents for an attorney misconduct study to help build new legislation.
