In the wake of her provocative book, prominent journalist Hanna Rosin offers up her "end of men" thesis to a two-day interdisciplinary conference held at BU Law in October. Her keynote address outlines the proposition that women have made such remarkable progress in all domains—and men have suffered such declines and reversals—that women are effectively surpassing men and becoming the dominant sex. Ralph Banks, author of Is Marriage for White People?, and Michael Kimmel, noted sociologist and spokesperson for The National Organization For Men Against Sexism, help incite and deepen the discussion with responses to Rosin's address.

March 26, 2011

BU Law students, faculty and staff, as well as family and friends braved the cold for the 2011 5K Ambulance Chase Fun Run/Walk.

Participants put the chilly temperatures aside as they raced from the front of the Law tower down Bay State road before crossing over to run along the esplanade. This community-building event has taken place for the past four years, and it continues to be a success each year with more and more participants.

More black men are in prison today than are in college. The underperformance of African-American males in elementary and secondary schools is a persistent crisis. Sharokky Hollie, founder of the California-based Center for Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning, says part of the problem is that many schools don't validate the home culture of black male students. Hollie has developed teaching methods that are more culturally and linguistically responsive, allowing for that crucial initial engagement between teacher and student. Here, he discusses those approaches, demonstrates training exercises, and explores the meaning of culture versus race.

Is Colin Kaepernick kneeling during the national anthem a sign of engaged protest, or lack of respect and/or the reason he’s not signed? What about the lack of diversity among sports journalists? What about race relations in sports; what’s the now version, 70 years after Jackie Robinson started playing in the major leagues?
These issues are the subject of an informed dialogue, not just noisy debate, among ESPN SportsCenter co-host Jemele Hill, Academy award winning filmmaker Ezra Edelman, Super Bowl winning coach Brian Billick and NFL veteran and tech start-up founder Shawn Springs in the panel titled Race Matters. Moderator Kevin Merida, editor of ESPN’s The Undefeated website led the hour-long provocative discussion at Boston University’s Play It Forward sports summit held at the Agganis Arena, Friday, April 14th, the eve of Boston Marathon weekend.
