Kaire Mbuende, the ambassador of Namibia to the United Nations, presents the keynote address. Mbuende discusses ten key factors that he says are fueling current African growth, including peace, stability, resources, investment in infrastructures, and most important, investment in people, including through education.

The second, on economy and markets, includes a presentation on entrepreneurship based upon the books Africa RisingÂ¬ and The 86 Percent Solution, by panelist Vijay Mahajan, the John P. Harbin Centennial Chair in Business, University of Texas, Austin, as well as discussions about local economics, how the perception of Africa has changed over time, and agricultural challenges in Burkina Faso.

<description><![CDATA[Enrique Silva, a Metropolitan College assistant professor of urban affairs and city planning, Anuradha Mukherji, a MET lecturer, and Pablo Suarez (GRSâ€™05), a visiting scholar at the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future and a guest scholar at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, discuss disasters in light of the recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile. Issues brought up include viewing disasters as a question of economic development, environmental protection and social justice, disaster management and planning, the role of media in reporting disasters, and the need to make use of local knowledge.
