Massinger and Fletcher’s collaborative play The Sea Voyage (1623) rewrites The Tempest, by Shakespeare. But in place of magic and patriarchal anxiety, the play features pirates, self-governing Amazons, treasure from a shipwreck, and even attempted cannibalism.
This year's production was staged April 21-23rd 2016, at the Boston University Student Theater at Agganis Arena, as part of BU's celebration of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death.
Willing Suspension Productions, established in 1996 and based in the Boston University English Department, is devoted exclusively to staging plays by Shakespeare’s lesser-known, but nonetheless fascinating, contemporaries.

A King and No King by Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher.

Arbaces, king of Iberia, plans to marry his sister Panthea to Tigranes, the king of Armenia and his conquered enemy. But when Arbaces finally sees his sister again after many years of war, he is so struck by her beauty that he falls in love with her instantly. As Tigranes languishes in prison with his lady-love Spaconia, and the cowardly captain Bessus seeks to prove his valor--but succeeds only in getting beaten repeatedly--Arbaces struggles with his conscience and his counselor and friend Mardonia, until a shocking revelation reveals the king to be "no king."
