Where is my home? Where am I from? How do I fit in?

For many international students, these seemingly simple questions don’t have easy answers. In the video above, we asked three soon-to-graduate international students—Sienna Chien (ENG’26) (Taiwan), Sunanda Guruprasad (Questrom’26) (India), and Emmanuella Erhunmwunsee (CAS’26) (Nigeria)—to share what it truly means to be a global citizen at BU. The students also reflect on what it’s like to come from thousands of miles away to study at an American university—including facing the inevitable disorientation of freshman year and the quest for a sense of belonging.

In our new video cooking series Mama Meals, BU students cook a dish that reminds them of home (with some virtual help from their families). Our first installment features Luyi Chen (Sargent’22), from Wenzhou, China, who shows us how to cook sticky rice, a popular breakfast treat there.

The delicious glutinous rice is topped with slices of youtiao (a long Chinese fried dough), rousong (a fluffy, savory meat floss made of dried pork), scallions, pickled mustard greens, and a “soup” of pork belly and shiitake mushrooms. Green peas are mixed into, and steamed with, the sticky rice to provide additional flavor. You can’t go wrong with more vegetables.

Hungry? Visit BU Today for the Wenzhounese Sticky Rice recipe featured in the video: https://www.bu.edu/articles/2021/mama-meals-how-to-prepare-sticky-rice/

In this episode of Lost and Found, Maria Lazou, a student from Kiev, Ukraine shares with us her passion for volunteering. Maria found her place at BU after joining the Global Engineering Brigades Club. After one of her family members had an undiagnosed stroke she started her journey to becoming a biomedical engineer. Inspired by the love and compassion of her family, which has always been there for her to help during challenging times, she is motivated to help other families to not go through this uncertain kind of emotions. After trying joining different groups and activities she felt that something was missing. It was then when she remembered her childhood times with her dad, when they use to go to a local orphanage to play and interact with the kids, she remembers the value of just sharing time with them, doing gardening or simply reading a story to them. She says that going back to those memories helped her to find inner peace and motivation while being far from her home.
