<description><![CDATA[According to historian Charles Sullivan, Harvard Square was founded in 1630 as the Puritan village of Newtowne, which would become Cambridge in 1638. Many of the original streets still exist.

Today the square (the area around the intersection of Mass Ave and Brattle and John F. Kennedy Streets) is a commercial center for Harvard students, Cambridge residents, and tourists.
