Going the Distance, produced by Jessie Beers-Altman, shares the story of the most unlikely, but popular race at the Penn Relays, and how the definition of “athlete” is truly ageless.

Jessie Beers-Altman is a Boston-based filmmaker and educator. A graduate of Boston University's MFA Film Production program, her experience includes independent documentary, broadcast television, educational video, corporate, promotional, non-profit, and web. As a storyteller, Jessie focuses on human-interest stories about people who are marginalized, march to a different beat, or seek to exist outside of their prescribed roles. In addition to filmmaking, Jessie lectures at Boston University and Emerson College, and is an active member of the New England Non-Fiction Cartel. As the daughter of an artist father and musician mother, Jessie picked a career in film to uphold the family tradition of avoiding a 9 to 5 desk job. She lives in Somerville, MA with her husband, Chris, their cats Wagner & Dixie, and their dog... a rambunctious boxer pup named Zoey.

She's shot a short film for Al Gore, filmed a feature on rapid land-use change in China, and this spring premiered the first of two documentaries on Cuba's world-class ballet program, but Associate Professor of Film Mary Jane Doherty says she owes much of her growth to a soil much closer to home.

"When we get going, my students and I generate something between us that's bigger than any one of us could have generated alone," says the two-time finalist for the Metcalf Award for Excellence in Teaching. "We have a laboratory environment where discoveries are made right there in the classroom. It's all about building a foundation where the students evolve and I do, too. It's just thrilling."
