Held on Sunday, May 21, Boston University’s 150th commencement ceremony was a day of joy, reflection, and celebration for the Class of 2023. David Zaslav (LAW’85), president and chief executive officer of Warner Bros. Discovery, delivered the Commencement Address and received an honorary degree. Zaslav’s presence drew protests from students as well as from members of the Writers Guild of America. Others who received honorary degrees included Ketanji Brown Jackson, Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court; Pamela Wood Avedisian, philanthropist and accomplished pianist; Stephen R. Karp, prominent real estate developer, Boston University Trustee Emeritus and alumnus; and Drew Weissman, Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine and Edward Avedisian, alumnus, philanthropist, and career clarinetist, whose honorary degree was conferred in December but was cited at the ceremony.

Nearly a year and a half after receiving their diplomas, Boston University’s Class of 2020 finally donned their scarlet caps and gowns and were honored for their four years of work and studying—the COVID-postponed 147th Commencement was held on Nickerson Field Sunday afternoon.

“COVID robbed you of a traditional senior year,” speaker Victor J. Dzau (Hon.’20), president of the National Academy of Medicine, said in his Commencement address to the 1,818 Class of 2020 graduates who returned to campus for the long-awaited ceremony. They traveled from 46 states and represented 61 countries. “You have already demonstrated incredible resilience and fortitude,” Dzau said. “You have prevailed and are here today with each other.”

Watch the setup, celebration, and breakdown of Boston University's historic 148th Commencement for the Class of 2021. Due to the ongoing pandemic and the need for social distancing, there were two separate ceremonies, one for advanced degree graduates in the morning, one for graduating seniors in the afternoon. Among many distinguished speakers, Noubar Afeyan, the cofounder and chairman of Moderna, Inc., addressed the members of the Class of 2021 gathered on Nickerson Field for the advanced degree ceremony, and US Representative Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) delivered the Commencement speech to the graduating seniors on the same field a few hours later. Time-lapse footage, provided by BU Productions, was recorded from the Nickerson Field press box.
