Hyfrydol Aspects was composed as a competition piece for my son Peter to perform at the 2009 National Trumpet Competition. My idea was to craft a piece that would be musically and physically accessible to young players, but would also provide some [...]"stretch": one section is in 5/8 meter, another requires the trumpeter to play in 3/4 over the pianist's 6/8, double tonguing may be explored (depending on tempo), and there are a few unusual accidentals and more complicated fingering work.
The hymn tune Hyfrydol (Welsh for "pleasant" or "melodious") is one of my favorites, especially in Ralph Vaughan Williams' harmonization. It has been set with several poignant texts, including two by Charles Wesley ("Love Divine, All Loves Excelling" and "Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus") and one each by William C. Dix ("Alleluia! Sing to Jesus!") and J. Wilbur Chapman ("Jesus! What a Friend for Sinners!"). The complete tune appears both in the opening and closing sections, in between which three fragments ("aspects") of the tune are developed separately.
