#FeatureFriday: “Our body is the solution and not the challenge” – Yo-EL Cassell, Head of CFA Movement

This is the art of Movement, where #myCFA students learn to use their bodies as instruments to highlight and express feelings and thoughts. The Movement language can be translated into any form, including dance, acting, lighting and stage design, music, composition…the list goes on!

The Boston University CFA School of Theatre has four Movement studios, including the newly renovated Studio 106 ?, and hosts imaginative performances in spaces around BU's campus.

Movement also takes the spotlight in the CFA InMotion Theatre Series, a creative and performative initiative that highlights storytelling through movement.

For Jayna Mikolaitis (CFA’22), juggling a double major in painting and graphic design wasn’t quite enough. She expanded her creative practice to include book making and weaving, the latter of which led to a summer of arts-based research with art education professor Felice Amato following her junior year.

“Weaving kind of incorporated that structural quality that graphic design has, but also had that tangible aspect that painting has,” Jayna says, “I think that being part of a larger research university is incredibly helpful for so many reasons. It did supply me the opportunity with conducting arts-based research in the first place, which was really wonderful.”
