Fulbright Country: Austria
Project Title: Curricular Call and Response: The Future of Music Education in Vienna, The City of Music

Katja is a Fulbright Combined Grantee and will travel to Austria this fall to conduct research and teach. In affiliation with the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (mdw), she will examine how the university curriculum in music education responds to calls for change that come directly and indirectly from the government and surrounding community. Katja’s master’s thesis, “Affirmation, Awareness, and Action: Curriculum for Social Justice and Music Education,” advanced her engagement with curriculum design and its importance in addressing current cultural influences in the lives of our students. Researching 21st century curriculum development inspired her to investigate how we have begun addressing diversity in music education at different levels and encouraged the desire for further cross-cultural investigation. Katja graduated Summa Cum Laude from BU in 2021 and was awarded a School of Music Departmental Award for her work as a Music Education Graduate Assistant. Through her assistantships in a variety of music education courses at BU, she gained insight and experience in the education of collegiate music students and preservice teachers. The Fulbright Austria Combined Grant will provide the perfect opportunity for Katja to continue evolving as both a teacher and researcher in the field of music education.
