| Two of the handsomest buildings that Boston
University has acquired over the years stare at each other just west of
the BU Bridge: 808 Commonwealth Avenue, the former Peter Fuller Cadillac
building, and 855 Commonwealth, once home of Fuller's luxury car rival,
Noyes Buick. After Noyes drove into the suburbs, the 1919 building was occupied
by Admiral and used for storing televisions and refrigerators. BU bought
the property in the late 1950s, and following a major renovation, the School
for the Arts set up shop in 1958. While much of the building's distinguished
first-floor interior was obscured at that time, many pleasing details are
still visible in the Art Gallery. Our photo was taken in 1962 and shows
clearly the showroom windows, bricked up some time in the '60s. Photo
