The occasion was the March 1941 BU Freedom of the Press conference, at which Luce, among others, was awarded an honorary doctor of letters. The editor and publisher of Time, Fortune, and Life magazines, Luce (1898-1967) was tremendously influential in shaping the way Americans saw the world.
